An edge of dock leveler, often abbreviated as EOD leveler, is a type of loading dock equipment used to bridge the gap between a loading dock and a truck trailer or other transportation vehicle. It provides a more convenient and efficient way to load and unload goods compared to manually lifting them between different heights.
The edge of dock leveler is typically installed at the edge of the loading dock. It is designed to handle lower-capacity applications and is most suitable for facilities that deal with similar truck bed heights and relatively light to medium loads. Unlike a conventional pit-style dock leveler that requires a recessed pit for installation, the edge of dock leveler sits above the dock floor.
When a truck backs up to the loading dock, the edge of dock leveler is activated by a lever or pull chain. The leveler’s lip extends and rests on the truck bed, creating a bridge between the dock and the vehicle. This bridging function allows forklifts and other material handling equipment to move goods between the dock and the truck with ease.
Edge of dock levelers are available in various sizes, weight capacities, and configurations to accommodate different types of trucks and loading requirements. They are a cost-effective loading dock solution for businesses with moderate loading needs or limited space for pit-style dock installations.
It’s worth noting that while edge of dock levelers are convenient, they may not be suitable for all loading situations. For heavy-duty operations or significant height differences between the dock and the truck, pit-style dock levelers or hydraulic dock levelers are more appropriate options.
